Finasteride for Women: Clinical Use and Contraindications

Clinical Indications in Women

  • The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends finasteride as an effective antiandrogen for hirsutism in PCOS patients, but it should be combined with oral contraceptives rather than used as monotherapy 5
  • Finasteride can be considered as an alternative antiandrogen when spironolactone is contraindicated or not tolerated, with a dose of 5 mg daily 5

Combination Therapy

  • The American Academy of Family Physicians suggests that antiandrogens, such as finasteride, should always be combined with ovarian suppression (oral contraceptives) for optimal efficacy and contraception 5
  • Combination therapy addresses both ovarian androgen production and peripheral androgen action, and must continue indefinitely unless underlying PCOS is corrected 5
