NG Tube Clamping Time After Medication Administration

Verification of Tube Placement

  • The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition recommends verifying proper NG tube placement with pH testing (aspirate should be pH <5.5) or radiographic confirmation, rather than relying on auscultation alone, to ensure safe medication administration 1

Tube Maintenance

  • Insufficient flushing before or after medications is a leading cause of tube obstruction, and a minimum 30 mL flush is recommended to prevent medication adherence to the tube walls and ensure complete delivery to the stomach, as suggested by the Clinical Nutrition guidelines 2, 3
