Cervical Spine Herniation Treatment

Surgical Interventions

  • The American Association of Neurological Surgeons recommends posterior laminoforaminotomy as a surgical treatment option for symptomatic cervical radiculopathy caused by soft lateral cervical disc herniations or cervical spondylosis with resulting lateral recess stenosis 1, 2
  • For patients with a herniated disc causing radiculopathy, lumbar fusion is not recommended as a routine treatment after primary discectomy, unless there are indications of preoperative lumbar spinal deformity or instability 3

Lumbar Spine Herniation Treatment

  • Lumbar fusion may be considered as a potential surgical adjunct in patients with significant chronic axial low back pain associated with radiculopathy due to a disc herniation, particularly in cases with preoperative lumbar spinal deformity or instability 3
