Dosage in Pregnancy

Formulations and Special Considerations

  • Erythromycin base can be taken at 500 mg four times a day for 7 days 3, 6

Adverse Effects and Precautions

  • Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea) and skin rashes 4
  • High doses of erythromycin increase the risk of adverse effects 4
  • There is an increased risk of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) in neonates during the month following erythromycin administration 4
  • Erythromycin should not be taken concurrently with astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, or terfenadine 4

Treatment Efficacy

  • Completing the recommended treatment duration is essential to avoid relapses, especially in pertussis where 14 days are recommended 4
