Amlodipine and Statin Combination Therapy
Introduction to Combination Therapy
- The American Heart Association recommends combining amlodipine with most statin types without dose adjustment, as this combination is safe for most patients 1
Amlodipine With Different Statins
- Amlodipine can be coadministered with atorvastatin, pitavastatin, rosuvastatin, fluvastatin, and pravastatin without evidence of significant interaction and without requiring dose adjustments, according to the American Heart Association 1
- The combination of amlodipine and rosuvastatin is generally safe and well-tolerated with no significant pharmacokinetic interactions 2
Important Caveats
- Diltiazem and verapamil are not interchangeable with amlodipine, as they cause more significant interactions with statins, including a 5-fold increase in simvastatin AUC with diltiazem 1
- Diltiazem and verapamil require a maximum simvastatin dose of 10 mg daily due to potent interactions 3
Monitoring and Dose Adjustment
- Check liver enzymes and CPK to rule out hepatotoxicity or myopathy caused by statins when coadministered with amlodipine 2
