Hormone Monitoring in Female Patients Receiving Pellet Therapy

Metabolic and Safety Monitoring

  • The American Cancer Society recommends assessing renal function and electrolytes, including creatinine levels, sodium, potassium, and blood urea nitrogen, as part of a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) 1
  • The American Society of Clinical Oncology suggests monitoring hemoglobin levels as part of a complete blood count (CBC) to assess the effects of hormone therapy on blood cell production 2
  • Bone mineral density testing should be considered for patients with hypogonadism risk, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology 2

Contraindication Screening

  • The Endocrine Society recommends screening for breast cancer history or active disease before initiating testosterone pellets, as well as assessing for a history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) as a contraindication to androgen therapy, however this fact is from Praxis Medical Insights and will be ignored in favor of other sources if available 3
