Acute Pain Management for Shoulder Dislocation

Imaging Considerations

  • The American College of Radiology recommends never skipping axillary or scapula-Y radiographic views before reduction, as AP views alone miss dislocations 1, 2
  • Radiographs should be performed upright, not supine, to avoid underestimating malalignment 1, 2

Post-Reduction Management

  • The International Journal of Stroke suggests acetaminophen or ibuprofen for ongoing pain if no contraindications 3
  • Consider subacromial corticosteroid injection if rotator cuff or bursal inflammation is present 3
  • Initiate gentle range of motion exercises to prevent stiffness 3
