Palatability Considerations for Liquid Cephalosporins

Impact of Taste on Adherence

  • Cefuroxime axetil oral suspension is poorly palatable for children, which can compromise medication adherence. 1
  • Clinical guidelines note that, although the suspension allows a convenient twice‑daily dosing schedule, its unpleasant taste is identified as a major limitation for pediatric use. 1

Alternative Liquid Cephalosporins

  • Cefdinir suspension has been reported to be “very well accepted” among children, indicating superior palatability compared with cefuroxime axetil suspension. 2
  • When taste is a concern, clinicians may consider alternative liquid cephalosporins such as cefdinir or cefpodoxime; however, cefpodoxime also exhibits poor taste, limiting its acceptability. 2
