Udenafil Treatment Guidelines
Contraindications and Precautions
- The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends that PDE5 inhibitors, such as udenafil, are absolutely contraindicated with nitrate medications due to the risk of severe hypotension 1
- Patients with certain cardiovascular risks should be assessed before prescribing PDE5 inhibitors, and those who cannot perform exercise equivalent to walking 1 mile in 20 minutes or climbing 2 flights of stairs in 20 seconds should be referred to a cardiologist before treatment 2, 3
Treatment Approach
- The National Comprehensive Cancer Network suggests that risk factor modification should be addressed alongside pharmacological treatment, including smoking cessation, weight loss, increasing physical activity, and avoiding excess alcohol consumption 1, 2
- An adequate trial of a PDE5i is defined as at least 5 separate occasions at the maximum dose before reporting it as ineffective 2, 3
- If udenafil fails, consider trying a different PDE5i before moving to second-line therapies 2, 3
Udenafil Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction
Introduction to Udenafil
- Udenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5i) used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction 4, 5
Efficacy and Safety
- Similar to other PDE5 inhibitors, udenafil improves erections and successful sexual intercourse rates compared to placebo 4
- The most common adverse events include headache, nasal congestion, and dyspepsia 5
Contraindications and Precautions
- PDE5 inhibitors should not be used concomitantly with nitrate medications due to risk of severe hypotension 6, 7
- For patients on sildenafil or vardenafil, nitrates should be avoided for at least 24 hours; for tadalafil, at least 48 hours 7
- Use with caution in patients with mild to moderate hepatic or renal impairment, initially at lower doses 8
