Recommended Dosage of Injection Trimethoprim Sulphamethoxazole for Adults
Standard Dosing Regimens
- The recommended intravenous dosage of Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) for adult patients is trimethoprim 320 mg per day and sulfamethoxazole 1,600 mg per day, divided into 2 doses and administered every 12 hours 1
Monitoring and Adverse Effects
- Patients receiving TMP-SMX injection should be monitored for gastrointestinal effects, such as nausea and vomiting, hypersensitivity skin reactions, and blood dyscrasias, including thrombocytopenia, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1
Special Considerations
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that TMP-SMX should be used with caution in patients with impaired hepatic function, folate deficiency, or blood dyscrasias, and is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to trimethoprim or sulfonamides 1
- The American Academy of Pediatrics and other medical organizations recommend that TMP-SMX should not be administered to pregnant women, nursing mothers, or infants aged <2 months due to potential risk for kernicterus, as stated in the MMWR Recommendations and Reports 1
- Patients receiving TMP-SMX injection should maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent crystalluria and renal stones, as advised by the National Institutes of Health 1
