Treatment for Hiccups in Children

First-Line Physical Maneuvers

  • For acute hiccups in a child, five sharp back blows to the middle of the back can be effective as they create an artificial cough mechanism that may terminate the hiccup reflex, and the child should be held in a prone position with the head lower than the chest while delivering the back blows, or positioned across the parent's thighs while the parent is kneeling for older children 1
  • Avoid abdominal thrusts in children as a treatment for hiccups as they may cause injury, and never perform blind finger sweeps of the pharynx as these can push foreign bodies further into the airway 1

When to Seek Medical Attention

  • Medical evaluation is necessary if the child develops difficulty breathing or signs of respiratory distress 2

Treatment Algorithm

  • Start with physical maneuvers (back blows) 1
