Treatment of Cutaneous Candidiasis

Efficacy of Clotrimazole

  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends clotrimazole as one of the most studied and recommended topical antifungal agents for the treatment of cutaneous Candida infections, demonstrating excellent efficacy 1
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that response to treatment is generally rapid, with improvement in signs and symptoms within 48-72 hours of initiating therapy 2
  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends applying 1% clotrimazole cream to the affected area twice a day for 7-14 days 1
  • Maintaining the infected area dry is important for the success of treatment, as recommended by the Infectious Diseases Society of America 1

Special Considerations

  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America notes that cutaneous candidiasis is especially common in obese and diabetic patients, where skin folds create a humid environment favorable for Candida growth 1
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that short courses of topical therapy rarely result in adverse effects, although some patients may experience cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions, characterized by rash and pruritus 2

Prevention of Recurrences

  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends maintaining skin dryness, especially in intertriginous areas, to prevent recurrences 1
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that in patients with recurrent infections, particularly those with risk factors such as diabetes, intermittent use of topical antifungals in prone areas may be considered 2
  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America emphasizes that controlling underlying conditions such as diabetes is essential to prevent recurrences 1
