Intravenous Paracetamol: Dose Adjustment for Renal Impairment and Administration/Monitoring Guidance

Dose Adjustment in Renal Impairment

  • Children with active renal impairment should receive a reduced intravenous paracetamol dose, with specific adjustment recommendations provided by pediatric experts. 1

Administration Timing and Meal Considerations

  • Intravenous paracetamol doses may be given with or without concurrent meals when the patient is being switched to oral therapy, facilitating flexible scheduling. 2

Monitoring and Discontinuation Criteria

  • If fever or related symptoms do not improve after a dose of intravenous paracetamol, the medication should be stopped and the treating physician contacted promptly. 2
  • Persistent fever lasting more than three days despite treatment warrants a medical evaluation to rule out underlying causes. 2
  • Clinicians should continuously monitor for any new symptoms that arise during intravenous paracetamol therapy and adjust management accordingly. 2
