Nebulization Guidelines for Berodual
Preparation and Administration
- The recommended dose of Berodual (fenoterol/ipratropium bromide) for nebulization is 0.5 ml (125 mcg of ipratropium bromide and 250 mcg of fenoterol) diluted in 2-3 ml of normal saline solution for adequate nebulization, according to the Thorax journal guidelines 1
- The solution should be diluted in a minimum of 2-3 ml of normal saline solution (0.9%) to ensure adequate nebulization, as recommended by the Thorax journal guidelines 1
- The total volume of liquid in the nebulizer chamber is usually 2.0-4.5 ml, as stated in the Thorax journal guidelines 1
- Most nebulizers leave approximately 0.5 ml of residual liquid after nebulization, so it is sufficient to start with 2-2.5 ml of medicated liquid, according to the Thorax journal guidelines 1
Nebulization Procedure
- A gas flow of 6-8 l/min should be used to nebulize 50% of particles to a diameter of 2-5 μm to facilitate deposition in small airways, as recommended by the Thorax journal guidelines 1
- Nebulization should last approximately 10 minutes for bronchodilators like Berodual, according to the Thorax journal guidelines 1
- In patients with severe acute asthma, oxygen should be used as the gas source for nebulization, as stated in the Thorax journal guidelines 1
- In other pulmonary diseases, air should be used unless oxygen is specifically prescribed, according to the Thorax journal guidelines 1
Patient Instructions
- The patient should sit upright or in a chair, breathe normally, not speak during nebulization, and keep the nebulizer in a vertical position, as recommended by the Thorax journal guidelines 1
Treatment Regimens
- For patients with moderate asthma, intermittent treatment with 0.5% nebulizer solution can be administered every 20 minutes for 3 doses, then as needed, according to the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology guidelines 2
Safety Precautions
- Water should not be used as a diluent because it can cause bronchoconstriction when nebulized, as warned by the Thorax journal guidelines 1
- After nebulization, the mouth should be rinsed to prevent the development of oral candidiasis, as recommended by the Thorax journal guidelines 1
- Patients should be instructed on how to use, clean, and assemble the nebulizer, and when to seek help, according to the Thorax journal guidelines 1
