DHEA Supplementation Guidelines

Primary Indications

  • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends DHEA (prasterone) for treating vaginal dryness and pain with sexual activity in postmenopausal women, with significant improvements in sexual desire, arousal, pain, and overall sexual function 1, 2

Dosing Recommendations

  • The Endocrine Society suggests a typical dose of 10-50 mg daily for women, with 25 mg being a common starting dose, and treatment efficacy should be guided by monitoring serum DHEA sulphate (DHEAS), androstenedione, and testosterone levels 3

Safety Considerations and Contraindications

  • The National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommends using DHEA with caution due to potential risks of hormone-dependent cancers, and use with caution in patients receiving aromatase inhibitor therapy, as DHEA increases circulating androgen levels 1, 2
  • The American Society of Clinical Oncology advises that DHEA should not be used by men with breast cancer 4
