Mycoplasma Genitalium Infection Coding and Treatment

Diagnostic and Treatment Considerations

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends using the ICD-10 code A63.8 for Mycoplasma genitalium infection, and additional symptom-based codes may be used as secondary codes to document specific manifestations, such as urethritis, cervicitis, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) 1
  • M. genitalium is considered an emerging STI of public health concern, with recommendations for partner notification and treatment to prevent reinfection 2

Public Health Implications

  • The public health community, including the CDC, considers M. genitalium an emerging STI of public health concern due to its contribution to non-chlamydial non-gonococcal urethritis in men and cervicitis and PID in women, with increasing resistance patterns 2
