Vaccination Guidelines for Infants

Minimum Age Requirements

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that the minimum age for DTaP, IPV, Hib, pneumococcal conjugate, and rotavirus vaccines is 6 weeks of age 1, 2, 4, 5
  • The minimum age requirement for these vaccines is critical to ensure the infant's safety and efficacy of the vaccines 1, 2, 4, 5

Vaccine-Specific Guidelines

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that the first dose of rotavirus vaccine must be administered between 6 and 12 weeks of age, and the series should not be started after 12 weeks of age 1, 3
  • The Hepatitis B vaccine can be given as a second dose at 1-2 months of age, with a minimum age of 4 weeks for any dose after birth 1, 2, 6
  • At 1 month and 26 days (approximately 8 weeks), the infant should receive the Hepatitis B vaccine (second dose) 1, 3
  • The infant should wait 2 more days to reach exactly 2 months (8 weeks) of age, then administer the full series including DTaP, IPV, Hib, PCV, and rotavirus 1, 3

Standard 2-Month Visit Schedule

  • The complete vaccine series at 2 months of age includes DTaP (first dose) 5, IPV (first dose) 5, Hib (first dose) 2, and Hepatitis B (second dose, if not already given) 2

Critical Rotavirus Timing Consideration

  • The rotavirus vaccine has a narrow window for initiation, with the first dose must be given between 6-12 weeks of age 1, 3
  • The series should not be started after 12 weeks of age 1
