Treatment of Cracked Nipple with Purulent Discharge

Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Physiologic nipple discharge is bilateral, from multiple ducts, and non-purulent, distinct from purulent discharge which may represent a widespread impetigo vulgaris requiring aggressive treatment, according to Praxis Medical Insights 1, 2

Breastfeeding Considerations

  • Breastfeeding should generally continue during treatment with systemic antibiotics, as these are compatible with lactation, however, for HCV-positive mothers, specialist input should be sought for bleeding or cracked nipples, as recommended by the Journal of Hepatology 3
