Skin Sensitivity Management

Introduction to Skin Sensitivity

  • To manage skin sensitivity, use gentle pH-neutral cleansers, fragrance-free moisturizers, and avoid known irritants while protecting the skin with appropriate barrier products, as recommended by the British Journal of Dermatology guidelines 1, 2

Gentle Skin Care

  • Use gentle, pH-neutral synthetic detergents and non-soap cleansers, replacing regular soaps with mild, pH5 neutral bath and shower formulations, and use tepid water for bathing, as suggested by the Annals of Oncology and British Journal of Dermatology guidelines 1, 2
  • Pat skin dry with clean, smooth towels rather than rubbing, as recommended by the Annals of Oncology guidelines 1
  • Wear fine cotton clothes instead of synthetic materials, as suggested by the Annals of Oncology guidelines 1

Moisturizing

  • Apply hypoallergenic moisturizing creams, ointments, or emollients daily, using fragrance-free formulations and applying liberally after bathing to lock in moisture, as recommended by the Annals of Oncology and British Journal of Dermatology guidelines 1, 2
  • Avoid greasy creams as they may worsen symptoms due to occlusive properties, as warned by the Annals of Oncology guidelines 1

Topical Treatments

  • For inflamed areas, use hydrocortisone 1% cream for temporary relief, applying no more than 3-4 times daily and for short periods (less than 7 days), as recommended by the Annals of Oncology guidelines 1
  • Consider topical calcineurin inhibitors as an alternative, though evidence is mixed, as noted by the Annals of Oncology guidelines 1

Irritant Avoidance

  • Avoid known mechanical and chemical irritants, such as wool fabrics, acids, bleaches, solvents, and individual triggers like excessive heat, as recommended by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology guidelines 3
  • Minimize exposure to extreme temperatures and use sunscreen daily (hypoallergenic, SPF30+, with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), as suggested by the Annals of Oncology guidelines 1

Protective Measures

  • Use protective gloves for household tasks, choosing rubber or polyvinyl chloride with cotton lining, and take gloves off regularly to prevent excessive sweating, as recommended by the British Journal of Dermatology guidelines 2, 4
  • Consider patch testing to identify specific allergens if symptoms persist beyond 7 days or worsen despite treatment, as suggested by the British Journal of Dermatology guidelines 2, 4
