Treatment of Hyperthyroidism in Graves' Disease

Initial Management and Follow-up

  • The American Society of Clinical Oncology recommends adding a beta-blocker, such as propranolol or atenolol, for symptomatic relief of tachycardia, tremor, and anxiety in patients with Graves' disease and hyperthyroidism 1
  • Monitoring of thyroid function tests, including TSH and Free T4, should be performed every 2-3 weeks initially to assess response to therapy, with follow-up visits scheduled every 2-3 weeks initially, then every 1-3 months once stable 1
  • Patients should be referred to endocrinology if symptoms persist beyond 6 weeks despite adequate therapy, and endocrine consultation should be considered for all patients with severe symptoms or complications 1
