Treatment of Breast Abscesses in Lactating Mothers

Diagnosis and Initial Approach

  • The American College of Radiology recommends ultrasound as the first-line imaging modality for lactating women, with nearly 100% sensitivity reported in many studies for diagnosis in the setting of a palpable mass 2

Treatment Options

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends drainage of the abscess, either by needle aspiration or catheter drainage, along with continued breastfeeding and appropriate antibiotics for lactating mothers with breast abscesses 1
  • Continued breastfeeding is encouraged, with regular feeding or expression of milk as an important adjunct to other treatments, and breastfeeding can continue on the affected side as long as the infant's mouth does not contact purulent drainage from the breast 1

Prevention

  • Regular and complete emptying of the breast is recommended to prevent abscesses during lactation, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics 1
