Management of IgE-Mediated Food Allergies with Xolair

Patient Selection and Treatment Criteria

  • The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recommends strict avoidance plus emergency preparedness, including an anaphylaxis management plan with ready access to injectable epinephrine, for IgE-mediated food allergies 1, 4
  • Adolescents with peanut and tree nut allergies are at highest risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis, making additional treatment options particularly valuable for this population 3
  • Patients with documented IgE-mediated food allergies, such as this patient with positive skin tests to multiple food allergens, may benefit from Xolair treatment 1, 2

Treatment Benefits and Risks

  • For patients with previous anaphylaxis, additional protection beyond avoidance and epinephrine is particularly valuable, and Xolair can provide this protection 3
  • Xolair can increase the threshold at which allergic reactions occur, providing protection against small accidental exposures, although the patient should still maintain strict food avoidance and carry emergency epinephrine 3
