Prucalopride Administration Guidelines

Introduction to Prucalopride Administration

  • The American Gastroenterological Association suggests that food does not affect the efficacy of prucalopride, as clinical trials did not restrict administration based on food intake 1, 2

Dosing Recommendations

  • The standard adult dose of prucalopride is 2 mg orally once daily, with or without food, as recommended by the European Society of Gastroenterology 3
  • For patients with severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min), the dose should be reduced to 1 mg once daily, according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence 3
  • Elderly patients do not require dose adjustment, as efficacy is comparable to younger adults, as stated by the American College of Gastroenterology 1, 2, 3

Clinical Considerations

  • The onset of action of prucalopride typically occurs within the first week, with side effects (such as headache, nausea, and diarrhea) usually resolving within days, as reported by the American Gastroenterological Association 1, 2, 3
  • The European Society of Gastroenterology notes that taking prucalopride at the same time daily may improve medication adherence, although food intake is not a factor 1, 2
