Precocious Puberty in Young Girls
Underlying Causes to Investigate
- Brain tumors or CNS lesions affecting the hypothalamus can cause central precocious puberty, which is the most common mechanism, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics 1
- Ovarian tumors or cysts, as well as adrenal disorders, may result in peripheral precocious puberty, as stated by the Endocrine Society 2
Immediate Evaluation Required
- A hormonal panel, including FSH, LH, and estradiol, should be conducted to differentiate between central and peripheral causes of precocious puberty, as recommended by the Pediatric Endocrine Society 1, 2
- Pelvic ultrasound is necessary to evaluate for ovarian masses, cysts, or other structural abnormalities in young girls with precocious puberty, according to the Society for Pediatric Radiology 1, 2
Treatment Approach
- Referral to pediatric endocrinology is mandatory for all cases of suspected precocious puberty, as stated by the American Academy of Pediatrics and supported by evidence from the Journal of Clinical Oncology 3
