Endodontic Root Filling Endpoint: Anatomical Relationships
Radiographic Assessment
- Intraoral radiographs with dedicated holders and beam aiming devices are indicated for canal shaping prior to root filling, as recommended by the American Dental Association, with an accuracy of 96% within ±0.5 mm of the apical constriction 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
- Follow-up radiographs should be obtained at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and then annually for 3 years, according to the American Association of Endodontists, to assess periapical health following root canal treatment 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Clinical Algorithm
- The American College of Dentists recommends using apex locator alone to prevent unnecessary radiation exposure in patients with medical, mental, or oral conditions that make repeated radiographs problematic, with a mean deviation from the ideal apical constriction significantly less than radiographic methods (p < 0.05) 1, 2
