Medication-Induced Hypokalemia

Medications Associated with Hypokalemia

  • Some antibiotics, such as levofloxacin, can cause potassium wasting, though this is less common than with other medication classes 1
  • The American College of Cardiology recommends regular serum potassium checks, especially for patients with cardiovascular conditions, as hypokalemia increases the risk of cardiac arrhythmias 1
  • Target serum potassium concentrations in the 4.0-5.0 mEq/L range, as even modest decreases can increase risks of cardiac complications 2, 3

Medications That Do Not Cause Hypokalemia

  • Amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, does not cause hypokalemia, though calcium channel blockers can worsen heart failure 2, 3
  • Potassium Chloride ER Tablet is actually a potassium supplement used to treat hypokalemia, not cause it 1
