Botox Contraindications and Precautions

Contraindications

  • The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery guidelines specifically mention allergy to botulinum toxin as an exclusion criterion for its use in treating spasmodic dysphonia 2, 3

Precautions

  • Botulinum toxin can spread from the injection site, potentially causing unintended muscle weakness, particularly in patients receiving higher doses (e.g., for spasmodic dysphonia) 1
  • Patients should remain upright for 3-4 hours after treatment, avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging treated areas, avoid drinking through straws, refrain from strenuous exercise for 24 hours, and avoid alcohol consumption for 24 hours to minimize complications 1
  • Monitoring for complications, such as signs of excessive weakness, asymmetry, difficulty swallowing, or breathing problems, is crucial, and patients should seek immediate medical attention if these occur 1
