Ceftriaxone Use in MSSA Infections

Preferred Treatment Options

  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends antistaphylococcal β-lactams such as oxacillin, nafcillin, or cefazolin as the preferred first-line agents for MSSA infections 1, 2.
  • For hospital-acquired pneumonia with MSSA, guidelines recommend piperacillin-tazobactam, cefepime, levofloxacin, imipenem, or meropenem when empiric MSSA coverage is needed 1.
  • The American Heart Association recommends nafcillin or other antistaphylococcal penicillins over cephalosporins like ceftriaxone for infective endocarditis caused by MSSA 2.

Specific Clinical Scenarios

  • For skin and soft tissue infections caused by MSSA, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases recommends cloxacillin or cephalexin as first-line options, not ceftriaxone 3.
  • For intra-abdominal infections, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases recommends ceftriaxone plus metronidazole as a second-choice option, not specifically for MSSA coverage 4.
  • For necrotizing fasciitis where MSSA may be involved, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases lists ceftriaxone plus metronidazole (with or without vancomycin) as an option, primarily for its broad-spectrum coverage 3.
