Absorbent Acrylic Dressing for Healing Biopsy Site

Dressing Selection Principles for Biopsy Sites

  • Dressings should be selected primarily based on exudate control, comfort, and cost 1
  • Occlusive dressings result in better wound healing than dry dressings for superficial wounds 2

Application and Management

  • Clean the biopsy site gently with running tap water or sterile saline before applying the dressing 2
  • Avoid antiseptic agents such as povidone-iodine for wound irrigation 2
  • Remove and inspect the wound if you notice redness, swelling, foul-smelling drainage, increased pain, or fever 2

When to Change or Remove the Dressing

  • For most biopsy sites, dressing changes can be reduced to once or twice a week 3

Cautions and Considerations

  • Avoid occlusive dressings if there are signs of infection, as they may promote bacterial growth in already infected wounds 4

Alternative Dressing Options

  • Hydrocolloid dressings: Good for minimal to moderate exudate 4
  • Foam dressings: Excellent for moderate to heavy exudate 4
  • Hydrogels: Best for dry or necrotic wounds 4
  • Films: Suitable for dry wounds with minimal exudate 4
