Age and Licensing Restrictions

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends Bexsero for persons aged 10-25 years in the United States 1, 2
  • Use of Bexsero outside the age range of 10-25 years is considered off-label 2

Dosing by Risk Category

  • For high-risk persons, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends administering 3 doses of Bexsero at 0, 1-2, and 6 months 3
  • High-risk categories include individuals with persistent complement deficiencies, anatomical or functional asplenia, and patients using complement inhibitors 2, 3

Booster Dosing for High-Risk Persons

  • For persons at continued increased risk, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends administering a single booster dose 1 year after completion of the primary series, then every 2-3 years thereafter 3

Critical Implementation Details

  • The minimum interval between any 2 doses of Bexsero is 4 weeks 4, 5
  • Bexsero and Trumenba are not interchangeable, and the same vaccine product must be used for all doses in a series 1, 4, 5

Special Considerations

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that meningococcal vaccines be administered at least 2 weeks before the first dose of complement inhibitor therapy 3
