Radiographic Follow‑Up for Third Metacarpal Fracture Splinting

Timing of Repeat Imaging

  • For patients with an isolated closed third metacarpal fracture managed with a functional hand‑based splint, obtain repeat radiographs 10–14 days after the initial study when the first films are equivocal or to confirm that fracture alignment is maintained. This recommendation is endorsed by the Journal of the American College of Radiology (2019) 1.

  • Early radiographic assessment at 10–14 days enables detection of loss of reduction that would exceed non‑operative criteria, allowing prompt referral for surgical consultation if needed. Evidence reported by the Journal of the American College of Radiology (2019) 2.
