Safe Handling and Storage of Punctured Multi-Dose Acetylcysteine Vials

Critical Safety Requirements

  • To maintain vial sterility after puncture, sanitize vial stoppers with 70% isopropanol before each needle puncture, use only sterile needles and syringes for each access, avoid direct contact contamination, and perform visual inspection for physical integrity after each use, as recommended by the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology 1
  • Discard multi-dose acetylcysteine vials if visible contamination, turbidity, leaks, cracks, or particulate matter appears, and never use beyond the manufacturer's expiration date, according to the CDC guidelines 2, 3

Single-Use vs. Multi-Dose Considerations

  • Single-use vials are frequently preservative-free and pose contamination risk if punctured multiple times, while multi-dose vials have minimal overall contamination risk, but consequences of contamination can result in life-threatening infection, as noted by the CDC guidelines 4, 5
