Use of IVIG with Ceftaroline

Mechanism and Clinical Context

  • IVIG functions through multiple immune mechanisms including Fc-γ receptor blockade, complement inhibition, B-cell receptor downregulation, and neutralization of circulating antibodies and cytokines 1
  • IVIG may benefit select patients with septic shock caused by toxic shock syndrome, necrotizing fasciitis, or those with primary humoral immunodeficiencies, according to the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine 2, 3

Patient Selection and Indications

  • Patients with documented hypogammaglobulinemia and recurrent infections may require IVIG replacement therapy while receiving antibiotics like ceftaroline for acute infections, as recommended by the American College of Rheumatology 4
  • IVIG is not routinely recommended for most infectious conditions and should be reserved for specific indications where evidence supports benefit, such as toxic shock syndrome, ANCA-associated vasculitis, and immune thrombocytopenia, according to the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the American College of Rheumatology 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
