Lip Revision and Cheiloplasty Guidelines

Primary Lip Repair

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends establishing normal lip anatomy, including reconstruction of the orbicularis oris muscle, creation of normal lip contour, and establishment of proper vermilion border, in cheiloplasty procedures 1

Secondary Lip Surgery

  • Scar revision is a common technique used in lip revision surgery to correct residual deformities after primary cheiloplasty, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2
  • Restoration of normal lip contour is a key objective of both cheiloplasty and lip revision procedures, as stated by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2
  • Placement of scars along natural boundaries is a consideration in both cheiloplasty and lip revision procedures, as recommended by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2

Timing and Alternative Options

  • Reconstruction of a lip that is scarred and disfigured is best performed only after growth of the lip has definitively ceased, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics 1
  • Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers can be used for minor lip enhancement without surgery, providing volumizing effects lasting 6-18 months, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 3
  • Autologous Platelet Concentrates (APCs) can be used for lip rejuvenation effects rather than significant volumizing, as stated by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 3
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) can be used to improve lip color, moisture, and texture, as recommended by the American Academy of Periodontology 4, 5
