Management of Intestinal Lymphangiectasia

Dietary Management

  • The cornerstone of treatment for intestinal lymphangiectasia is a diet low in long-chain triglycerides (<5% of total energy intake) and enriched with medium-chain triglycerides (>20% of total energy intake), with energy and protein intakes of at least 30 kcal/kg actual body weight/day and 1.2 g/kg actual body weight/day, as recommended by Clinical Nutrition guidelines 1
  • In patients with protein-losing enteropathy due to intestinal lymphangiectasia, a hospital diet (protein-energy enriched diet) should be provided due to frequent malnutrition, according to Clinical Nutrition guidelines 1

Monitoring and Follow-up

  • Regular monitoring of serum albumin levels is essential to evaluate treatment efficacy, as suggested by Praxis Medical Insights 2
