Overactive Bladder Treatment with Gemtesa (Vibegron)

Mechanism and Benefits

  • Vibegron is a beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist, which represents an alternative to antimuscarinic medications for OAB treatment, with a favorable side effect profile 1

Treatment Algorithm for OAB

  • The American Urological Association recommends beginning with behavioral therapies, including bladder training, delayed voiding, pelvic floor muscle training, fluid management, and weight loss, as first-line therapy for OAB 2
  • Beta-3 agonists, like vibegron, are typically preferred before antimuscarinic medications due to their favorable side effect profile, with a recommended dose of 75 mg once daily 1
  • Combination therapy with behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy, or a beta-3 agonist with an antimuscarinic medication, may be considered for patients with inadequate response to monotherapy 4, 5

Special Considerations and Warnings

  • The use of beta-3 agonists like vibegron may be preferable for elderly patients, as they do not have the same risk profile for cognitive impairment or dementia as antimuscarinic medications 1
