Impact of Dissolving Augmentin 875 mg Tablets on Antimicrobial Efficacy

Therapeutic Effectiveness

  • In patients with infections caused by β‑lactamase‑producing Haemophilus influenzae or Moraxella catarrhalis, maintaining adequate clavulanate concentrations is essential for clinical success; dissolving the 875 mg tablet in water markedly degrades clavulanate and can compromise this β‑lactamase inhibition, reducing effectiveness against these key pathogens. – American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO‑HNS) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Pharmacokinetic Considerations

  • The modified‑release adult formulation of amoxicillin/clavulanate is designed to provide enhanced pharmacokinetic exposure; crushing or dissolving the tablet eliminates this controlled‑release property, leading to loss of the intended delivery profile. – American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO‑HNS) 1, 2
