Dexamethasone for Throat Pain: Dosing and Frequency

Route of Administration

  • Oral and intravenous dexamethasone are equivalent, with a 1:1 conversion, meaning 10 mg oral is equivalent to 10 mg IV, according to Praxis Medical Insights 1
  • IV administration should be given slowly over several minutes if used, as recommended by Praxis Medical Insights 2

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • The dose for throat pain (10 mg) should not be confused with other indications, such as chemotherapy-induced nausea, which uses 8-20 mg, as stated in the Journal of Clinical Oncology 3 and 4
  • The dose for immune thrombocytopenic purpura, which requires 40 mg, should not be confused with the dose for throat pain, according to Praxis Medical Insights 2
