Clinical Presentation of Venomous Snake Bites

Local and Systemic Effects

  • The American Heart Association, as published in Circulation, notes that pit viper bites cause immediate local tissue injury with pain, swelling, and redness at the bite site, while coral snake bites produce neurotoxic effects with minimal local findings but progressive paralysis developing within minutes to hours 1
  • Progressive swelling and edema of the affected extremity develops within 30 minutes and continues to spread, with redness, warmth, and tenderness at and around the bite site 1
  • Hypotension and shock can occur in severe cases of pit viper envenomation, with muscle fasciculations that may progress to paralysis 1

Neurotoxic Effects of Coral Snake Envenomation

  • The American College of Medical Toxicology, as referenced in Praxis Medical Insights, states that coral snake bites are characterized by minimal to no local tissue injury at the bite site, with progressive paralysis developing within minutes to hours after the bite 2
  • Neuromuscular weakness can rapidly progress to respiratory compromise, and the absence of significant local swelling or pain does not rule out serious envenomation with coral snakes 2
  • Any signs of respiratory compromise or difficulty breathing, particularly with suspected coral snake bites, require urgent antivenom therapy 2

Timeline and Severity of Envenomation

  • Coral snake neurotoxicity can begin within minutes but may be delayed up to several hours, requiring prolonged observation, as noted in both Circulation and Praxis Medical Insights 1, 2
