Calculating Caloric Requirements for Weight Loss

Introduction to Caloric Deficit

  • To achieve weight loss, create a moderate daily caloric deficit of 500-750 kcal from the estimated total energy expenditure, resulting in a target intake of approximately 1200-1500 kcal/day for a 46-year-old female, according to the American College of Cardiology guidelines 1

Calculating Resting Energy Expenditure (REE)

  • For adult women, the REE can be calculated using the formula: REE = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) - 5 × age (years) - 161, as recommended by the American Academy of Family Physicians 2

Determining Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

  • Multiply REE by an activity factor, where light activity (1-3 days/week) is 1.375, moderate activity (3-5 days/week) is 1.55, and very active (6-7 days/week) is 1.725, according to the American College of Sports Medicine 1, 3

Creating Caloric Deficit for Weight Loss

  • A 500-750 kcal daily deficit typically results in approximately 0.45-0.7 kg (1-1.5 pounds) weight loss per week, as stated by the National Academy of Sciences 1
  • The minimum recommended caloric intake for women should be 1200-1500 kcal/day to ensure nutritional adequacy, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 4, 1

Adjusting for Safe and Sustainable Weight Loss

  • Aim for a weight loss of 0.25-1 kg per week (approximately 5-10% of initial body weight over six months), as recommended by the American Heart Association 4
  • Very low energy diets (<1000 kcal/day) are strongly discouraged due to the risk of malnutrition and functional decline, according to the American Geriatrics Society 4

Important Considerations

  • Ensure adequate protein intake of at least 1 g/kg body weight/day to preserve muscle mass, as recommended by the International Society of Sports Nutrition 4
  • Include appropriate intake of micronutrients, according to the National Institutes of Health 4
  • Add 150 minutes/week of moderate-intensity physical activity to enhance weight loss, as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine 1
  • Increase to 200-300 minutes/week for better long-term weight maintenance, according to the American Heart Association 1
  • Implement daily self-monitoring of food intake, physical activity, and body weight, as recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics 3
