Treatment of Gracilis Muscle Hematoma
Initial Management
- The initial treatment for gracilis muscle hematomas involves applying the RICE protocol, which includes rest to avoid activities that stress the injured muscle, ice to reduce bleeding and inflammation, compression to limit swelling, and elevation to reduce swelling, as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine 1, 2
- Pain management with appropriate analgesics is also necessary as needed, according to the American Pain Society 2
Treatment Based on Severity
Large or Complicated Hematomas
- For large hematomas causing significant pain or functional impairment, ultrasound-guided aspiration or preperitoneal packing may be considered, as suggested by the American College of Surgeons 1, 2
Monitoring for Complications
- It is essential to watch for signs of compartment syndrome, which requires immediate surgical intervention, as emphasized by the Orthopaedic Trauma Association 1
