Side Effects and Considerations of Aripiprazole Intramuscular Injection

Common and Metabolic Side Effects

  • The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry notes that aripiprazole has a lower risk of causing elevated prolactin levels, weight gain, and metabolic disturbances compared to other antipsychotics 1
  • Aripiprazole has a favorable safety profile, with common side effects including headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and sedation, as well as psychiatric effects like agitation, anxiety, and insomnia 1

Rare but Serious Side Effects and Special Populations

  • The Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry recommends that aripiprazole should only be used in pregnancy if benefits justify potential risks to the fetus, and interruption of breastfeeding may be prudent 2
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition associated with aripiprazole use 2

Dosage and Monitoring Considerations

  • The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry suggests that lower doses of aripiprazole may be required in elderly patients due to increased sensitivity to side effects, and dose adjustments may be necessary in patients with renal or hepatic impairment 1
  • Monitoring of vital signs is recommended before, during, and after aripiprazole injection until stable 3
