Alcohol and Breastfeeding Timeframe

Alcohol Transfer to Breast Milk

  • A breastfeeding mother should wait at least 2 hours after consuming a single standard drink before nursing or expressing milk to minimize infant alcohol exposure 1
  • Breast milk alcohol concentrations closely parallel blood alcohol concentrations, with peak levels occurring 30 to 60 minutes after alcohol consumption 1

Evidence-Based Recommendations

  • Moderate alcohol consumption (up to 1 standard drink per day) is not known to be harmful to the infant, provided the mother waits at least 2 hours after drinking before nursing 1
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that this guidance applies specifically to moderate consumption (≤1 drink per day), not higher amounts 1

Important Caveats

  • Moderate intake does not appear to affect breastfeeding duration when appropriately timed 1
