Ketamine Dosage Recommendations for Anesthesia Induction

Intravenous Dosage

  • A dose of 1.5 mg/kg intravenous ketamine is more effective than 1.0 mg/kg, with only 5.5% of patients requiring additional doses, compared to 54% with the lower dose, according to the American College of Emergency Physicians 1, 2

Intramuscular Dosage

  • A dose of 4 mg/kg intramuscular ketamine in combination with 0.01 mg/kg atropine results in a faster onset of action (3 minutes vs. 18 minutes) and shorter time to discharge (85 minutes vs. 113 minutes) compared to other sedatives, as recommended by the American College of Emergency Physicians 3

Onset and Duration of Action

  • The average recovery time after intravenous ketamine administration is approximately 84 minutes (range: 22-215 minutes), according to the American College of Emergency Physicians 4, 2

Additional Recommendations

  • Continuous monitoring of vital signs, including EKG, pulse oximetry, and regular blood pressure measurements, is required during ketamine administration, as recommended by the American College of Emergency Physicians 5, 2

Special Considerations

  • Ketamine is associated with frequent side effects, including vomiting (7-8%), nausea (4-5%), ataxia (7-8%), and dysphoria (1%), according to the American College of Emergency Physicians 4, 2
