Safe Co-Administration of Prevagen and Eliquis

Pharmacokinetic Interactions

  • Apixaban is a substrate of both CYP3A4 enzymes and P-glycoprotein (P-gp)/BCRP transporters, which means its metabolism can be affected by drugs that interact with these pathways, according to the American College of Clinical Pharmacology 1
  • No clinical guidelines or research evidence indicates that apoaequorin (Prevagen) interacts with the metabolic pathways that affect apixaban, as stated by the American Heart Association 1

Clinical Guidance

  • Patients taking apixaban require dose adjustments or contraindications only when combined with medications that are moderate to strong inhibitors of both CYP3A4 and P-gp/BCRP pathways, as recommended by the European Society of Cardiology 1
  • Significant interactions with apixaban typically occur with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers, according to the European Heart Association 2
  • P-glycoprotein inhibitors can also cause significant interactions with apixaban, as noted by the European Respiratory Society 3

Patient Management

  • Regular monitoring for any unusual bleeding or bruising should continue as standard practice for patients on apixaban, regardless of Prevagen use, as advised by the American College of Clinical Pharmacology 1
  • Individual patient factors such as age, renal function, and other concomitant medications should still be considered in the overall medication management, according to the Anaesthesia society 4
