Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Characteristics

Demographics

  • The American Psychiatric Association notes that OCD is actually more common in females than males in community epidemiological studies 1
  • Clinical samples show a more even gender ratio, but this doesn't reflect true population prevalence 1
  • Males do show earlier onset, with nearly 25% having onset before age 10, but this doesn't mean higher overall prevalence 2

Age of Onset

  • The strongest predictor of lifetime OCD is actually age 18-29 years, not 30-40, according to the International OCD Foundation 2
  • OCD typically starts early in life, with nearly 25% of males having onset before age 10 1, 2
  • In females, onset often occurs during adolescence 1, 2

Treatment

  • The American Psychological Association recommends Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) as a first-line, evidence-based treatment for OCD 3
  • ERP is specifically recommended as first-line treatment by major psychiatric organizations, such as the National Institute of Mental Health 5
