Management of Post-Fracture Swelling

Factors Influencing Swelling Resolution

  • Comminuted fractures require 3-6 weeks of rigid immobilization, which can affect swelling patterns 1
  • Early mobilization is critical once fracture stability is achieved to prevent complications 2

Clinical Monitoring and Intervention

  • Patients should be counseled that minor swelling is physiological and typically disappears within the first week 3
  • Persistent swelling beyond 1 week requires evaluation for outflow obstruction, hematoma, infection, or venous hypertension 3
  • Unremitting swelling during follow-up warrants reevaluation for complications 1
