Doxorubicin Treatment for Stage III Favorable Histology Wilms Tumor

Standard Treatment Regimen

  • The American Heart Association, as reported in Circulation, recommends a cumulative doxorubicin dose for Stage III favorable histology of 150 mg/m², which represents a dose reduction from the historical 300 mg/m² used in the 1970s, specifically to minimize cardiotoxicity while maintaining efficacy 1
  • The Circulation journal suggests that the reduced cumulative dose of 150 mg/m² significantly decreases long-term cardiovascular toxicity, and systematic cardiac monitoring is mandatory during and after treatment, including echocardiography at baseline, during treatment, and long-term follow-up 1

Cardiotoxicity Monitoring

  • According to the Circulation journal, cardiotoxic effects occur in approximately 5% of children receiving doxorubicin for Wilms tumor, and the reduced cumulative dose of 150 mg/m² decreases long-term cardiovascular toxicity 1
