Ceftazidime Dosing for Pseudomonas UTI in Elderly Patients

Dosing and Administration

  • For Pseudomonas infections, higher doses of ceftazidime are recommended: 2 grams IV every 8 hours, as suggested by the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection 1

Duration of Therapy

  • A treatment course of 10-14 days is recommended for complicated UTIs caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as recommended by the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection 1
  • In recurrent UTIs, especially in elderly patients, the full 14-day course is often preferred to ensure complete eradication, according to the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection 1

Monitoring and Hydration

  • Assess clinical response within 72 hours of initiating therapy, as recommended by the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection 1
  • Ensure adequate hydration during treatment to maintain renal function and help flush the urinary tract, as suggested by European Urology 4
  • Consider follow-up urine cultures after completion of therapy to confirm eradication, as recommended by the Journal of Microbiology, Immunology and Infection 1

Alternative Administration

  • Continuous infusion may be an alternative in some cases (100-150 mg/kg/day) but is generally reserved for specific situations, as discussed in the European Respiratory Journal 2 and 3
