Clindamycin Dosage for Soft Tissue Infections

Introduction to Clindamycin Treatment

  • The American College of Clinical Pharmacology recommends a clindamycin dosage of 300-450 mg orally every 6-8 hours or 600-900 mg intravenously every 8 hours for soft tissue infections in adults, depending on the severity of the infection 1, 2

Dosage by Administration Route

  • For mild to moderate infections, the Infectious Diseases Society of America suggests 300-450 mg orally every 6-8 hours, with a typical duration of 7-10 days based on clinical response 1, 2
  • For severe infections, the recommended dosage is 600-900 mg intravenously every 8 hours 1, 3

Pediatric Dosage

  • The Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society recommends a pediatric dosage of 10-20 mg/kg/day divided into 3 doses orally, or 25-40 mg/kg/day divided into 3-4 doses intravenously 2, 4

Considerations by Infection Type

  • For MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infections, the Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends 300-450 mg orally every 6-8 hours or 600 mg intravenously every 8 hours for adults, and 10-13 mg/kg/dose every 6-8 hours for children, not exceeding 40 mg/kg/day 7, 2, 6
  • For necrotizing soft tissue infections, the recommended dosage is 600-900 mg intravenously every 8 hours for adults, and 10-13 mg/kg/dose every 8 hours intravenously for children, with consideration for combination therapy 3, 8

Treatment Duration

  • The Infectious Diseases Society of America suggests a treatment duration of 7 days for uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections, and 10-14 days or more for complicated infections, based on clinical response 1, 2, 3
